Maha Nawami

Maha Nawami is the ninth day of the Dashain festival, which is celebrated in Nepal and some parts of India. It is also known as the "Nawami" or "Nava Durga Puja" day, which is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga. This day is considered to be the most auspicious day of the festival, and it is believed that Goddess Durga defeated the demon Mahishasura on this day.

On Maha Nawami, people wake up early in the morning and take a bath. They wear new clothes and offer prayers to Goddess Durga at home or in temples. The main puja is performed in the afternoon, where people offer various fruits, sweets, flowers, and other items to the Goddess. In some parts of Nepal, animal sacrifices are also made on this day, mostly in the form of buffaloes or goats.

Apart from the puja rituals, Maha Nawami is also a day of social gatherings and feasting. People visit their relatives and friends, exchange greetings, and enjoy traditional Nepali cuisine. It is a day when people indulge in traditional games and sports like playing cards, swing, flying kites, and playing badminton.

In the evening, people light oil lamps or candles in their homes and decorate them with colorful rangolis and flowers. They also visit nearby pandals or temporary temples set up in their communities to offer prayers to Goddess Durga.

Overall, Maha Nawami is a day of devotion, celebration, and togetherness for Nepali people. It marks the end of the Navratri festival and prepares everyone for the final day of Dashain, the day of Vijaya Dashami.
