About Kanchenjunga Region
Kanchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world. It lies between Nepal and Sikkim, India, with three of the five peaks (Main, Central, and South) directly on the border, and the remaining two (West and Kangbachen) in Nepal's Taplejung District. It is the second highest mountain in Nepal and the third highest in the world. Kanchenjunga was designated as a conservation area in March 1998 and covers an area of 2035 sq. km. This gem is in the northeast corner of Nepal near the Sikkim area renowned for many who follow the Bon religion that pre-dates Tibetan Buddhism. Taplejung district is also renowned for its high peaks with 11 that stand higher than 7,000 m and is full of sparkling glaciers. The conservation area is considered unique in the world as a mountain ecosystem. It is envisioned as a tri-national peace park with Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) of China to the north and Sikkim, India, in the east. In Sikkim, India there already exists the Kanchenjunga National Park. This is adjacent to the KCA of Nepal. It rises with an elevation of 8,586 m (28,169 ft) in a section of the Himalayas called Kanchenjunga Himal delimited in the west by the Tamur River, in the north by the Lhonak Chu and Jongsang La, and in the east by the Teesta River.
