Kodari

About Kodari

Kodari is border crossing from Nepal into the Tibet autonomous region it lies in the Bagmati zone of Sindhupalchwok district. Besides being a place of stunning natural beauty, it has an exotic history going back to ancient times as the starting point of the trans- Himalayan caravan route, the Nepalese equivalent of the silk road. Merchants bound for Lhasa would head north from Kodari and cross the Kuti pass before turning east to begin the perilous journey over the Tibetan plateau. This border village is still an important trading center between Tibet and Nepal. The 2015 earthquakes essentially closed the rout due to the numerous landslides and boulders coming down and damaging the roads. There was an evacuation and people have been slow to come back and there is a large reduction in trading. The 144 km Arniko Highway connecting Kathmandu with Kodari passes through magnificent river gorges and splendid mountain scenery. Three kilometers short of Kodari is the famous hot water spring called Tatopani, meaning hot water. People come here from all over Nepal to bath in the hot water bath. Kathmandu to Kodari traveling by bus its about 114 kilometers.
Kodari is located at an altitude of 2,515 meters (8,251 ft). The height gain is from 1,317 metres (4,321 ft) to 2,300 metres (7,500 ft). On a clear day, the Himalayan chain is visible on both sides of the road with the beautiful scenario. From Zhangmu to Nyalam, a distance of 33 kilometers the height gain is from 2,300 meters (7,500 ft) to 3,750 meters (12,300 ft).
